President Trump has put the subject of U.S. Territorial Expansion on the table.
The United States grew from the original 13 States by acquisition of new territory:
Establishment of the Northwest Territory
The Louisiana Purchase
Mexican War (Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago).
The Alaska Purchase (“Seward’s Folly”).
These acquisitions involved payments for the territories that were low in price and created the powerhouse country that we have today.
The U.S. Leadership showed wisdom and foresight in this growth.
President Trump has publicized the idea of Canada and Greenland as additions to the United States.
Here is a different proposal that would provide huge growth potential and solve significant issues:
Acquisition of Mexico as a U.S. Territory
The Benefits are:
Resolution of Border Control Issues.
Potential for Economic Growth in a Country That Underperforms.
Elimination of Cartels, Gangs, and Corruption.
Observations:
Mexico has been unable to govern itself for over 100 Years. A new Territorial Government under U.S. direction would be empowered to heal the problems.
The U.S. could commit military and law enforcement resources to take out the lawlessness and abuse suffered by the Mexican people.
It would open investment by U.S. companies, new jobs, and improving incomes for Mexican citizens.
It would eliminate tariff issues with an open economic border.
A more reliable production source than other contentious countries such as China.
This is only a Summary of the Opportunities.
Consider that the GDP per capita in Mexico is only $ 14,000 per year. Compare that to U.S. GDP per capita of $ 82,000 per year.
With a Mexican population of 131 Million people, this provides an indication of the potential growth opportunity. It would vastly improve the standard of living for the Mexican people.
Of course, this would not be a slam-dunk process. It will take extensive Leadership and Negotiation.
Is President Trump up for it ? It deserves some serious consideration.
