Global Foreign Policy - Part 2

Cogport previously posted about the factors in Global Foreign Policy leading to the action against Iran.  Please read.

In the last three weeks some things have become clearer.

Our European “allies” have given no support to help in the Straits of Hormuz, although they have the capacity.

Our long history of Eurocentric-based foreign policy is coming to an end.

What is failing:

·        The United Nations

·        NATO

Ukraine is another example of how the EU countries fail.  They sit on their hands and expect the U.S. to do something about Putin.  Well, they better wake up and smell the burnt toast before Putin takes back Eastern Europe in a new Soviet Union.

Cogport has also previously posted about Putin’s aggressive ambitions.  Ukraine is only the start.  It is up to the EU to stop it, but the EU leadership does not exist to address this problem on their own doorstep.

The combined EU economy and population is bigger than the U.S.  Yet they scrimp on Defense spending and expect the U.S. to step up under NATO and make up for their lack of responsibility.  The U.S. Share of total NATO defense spending: ~60–62%, about $600 Billion.

We have fooled ourselves into compliance with that EU policy, and now is the time to end it.

It is horrific to see the death and suffering in Ukraine.  The EU is the place under direct threat.  They should own the problem.  The U.S. could continue to provide aid, but to what point if the EU sits back.  They must take the lead.

This points to a new era of Global Foreign Policy for the U.S.

Trump has made steps that could create a new American coalition.

Instead of NATO, we could have an ATO (American Treaty Organization) composed of U.S., Canada, Mexico, and South American countries.

The potential for economic and defense cooperation is huge.  It would easily be the safest, independent, and most progressive organization on Earth.

There would be less economic dependence on unfriendly countries such as China.  A combined Defense would stop any threats.

Summary:

A new Vision of Global Relations is at hand.  We need to get out of the past.

Do we have the courage to make that happen?

Marco Rubio would be the perfect candidate to lead this initiative.
